Cisplatin is still a widely used anticancer drug characterized by significant nephrotoxicity. Acute kidney injury (AKI), diagnosed based on the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) criteria, has limitations, including a delayed increase in creatinine. We determined the usefulness of neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1), and interleukin-18 (IL-18) in diagnosing AKI according to the KDIGO criteria in patients treated with cisplatin. We recruited 21 subjects starting cisplatin-based chemotherapy (Cisplatin-based group) and 11 treated with carboplatin-based chemotherapy or 5-fluorouracil regimens (non-cisplatin-based group). Blood and urine samples were collected during four subsequent cycles of chemotherapy (68 and 38 cycles, respectively). AKI occurred in four patients in the cisplatin-based group (5.9% of 68 cisplatin-based chemotherapy cycles). Among them, three urinary markers were increased by over 100% in two cases, two in one case and one in another. A doubling of at least one investigated parameter was observed more frequently during cisplatin-based chemotherapy (80.3% vs. 52.8%; OR = 3.65, 95% CI: 1.49-8.90; p < 0.01). The doubling of at least one new urinary AKI marker was more common in patients receiving cisplatin and frequently was not associated with overt AKI. Thus, a subclinical kidney injury detected by these markers occurs more frequently than deterioration in kidney function stated with creatinine changes.

Solifenacin, a selective muscarinic receptor antagonist, is one of the best-tolerated and most effective medicines that relieve storage symptoms in patients with an overactive bladder (OAB). However, the persistence of solifenacin in daily clinical practice remains far below that reported in clinical trials. This study aimed to analyze the adherence of patients to the therapy and the reasons for solifenacin discontinuation and non-regular use in OAB patients managed by urologists. Data concerning non-compliance and the discontinuation of solifenacin, along with the reasons, were collected during two consecutive visits for 64,049 OAB outpatients. Over the two visits, 81.6% of the patients continued therapy, and 88.6% were taking solifenacin regularly. An age ≥ 75 yrs., the male sex, a rural or small-city dwelling, and a prescription of ≥10 mg predicted therapy continuation. The female sex, a higher education, a short or long duration of an OAB, and a non-idiopathic OAB predicted regular use. The persistence of nycturia and urinary incontinence during therapy predicted both discontinuation and non-regular use. Dissatisfaction with therapy was the most frequent reason for discontinuation. In conclusion, an initial prescription of solifenacin at a low dose reduces the chance of OAB symptom improvement and results in more frequent discontinuation. A high rate of discontinuation related to dissatisfaction suggests unrealistic expectations for OAB patients and insufficient education by urologists.

Introduction: Some studies indicate the role of selected adipokines in the development of endometriosis. However, a comprehensive assessment of plasma, peritoneal, and endometrioma fluids adipokines concentrations in women with ovarian endometriosis has not yet been performed. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze plasma, peritoneal, and endometrioma fluids selected adipokines concentrations in women operated on for ovarian endometriosis. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional cohort study involved 56 women operated on for ovarian endometriosis. Body mass, height, and waist circumference were measured, and BMI was calculated. Plasma, peritoneal, and endometrioma fluids adiponectin, leptin, omentin resistin, RBP4, and visfatin/NAMPT were determined by ELISA. Results: The highest plasma levels of adiponectin, leptin, omentin, and RBP4 than in the endometrioma and peritoneal fluids were found, while levels of resistin and visfatin/NAMPT were significantly higher in endometrioma fluid than in plasma and peritoneal fluid. In addition, levels of visfatin/NAMPT were significantly higher in peritoneal fluid than in plasma. There were also positive correlations between leptin, RBP4, and adiponectin levels in endometrioma and peritoneal fluids (ρ = 0.28; p < 0.05; ρ = 0.31; p < 0.05; ρ= 0.32; p < 0.05, respectively). There were no associations between adipokines levels in plasma, endometrioma, and peritoneal fluids and endometriosis stage. Conclusion: Our results show that visfatin/NAMPT and resistin may be locally secreted in endometrioma related to inflammation regardless of the stage of endometriosis.

Atherosclerosis is a complex process involving endothelial dysfunction, vascular inflammation, vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation, angiogenesis, and calcification. One of the pathomechanisms of atherosclerosis is the upregulation of Wnt signaling. This study aimed to summarize the current knowledge regarding the role of Wnt signaling and sclerostin in atherosclerosis, vascular calcification, aneurysms, and mortality based on the PubMed database. We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) recommendation and identified 160 papers that were included in this systematic review. The published data highlight that the upregulation of Wnt components facilitates the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis, arterial remodeling, VSMCs proliferation and phenotypic transition to the osteoblastic lineage in the arterial wall. This results in protein secretion, cell migration, calcification, fibrosis and aneurysm formation. The transformation of VSMCs into osteoblast-like cells that is observed in atherosclerosis results in sclerostin expression inhibiting the Wnt pathway. Furthermore, it was shown that sclerostin, expressed in atherosclerotic plaques, inhibits aneurysm formation in a mouse model. However, in humans, while the antisclerostin antibody romosozumab inhibits bone resorption, biochemical parameters of endothelial activation and inflammation are not affected, and the incidence of aneurysms is not increased. It was suggested that detecting sclerostin in the calcified aortic atherosclerotic plaques reflects a defense mechanism against Wnt activation and inhibition of atherosclerosis, although this has only been shown in animal models. Moreover, an increased number of vascular cells converted to osteogenic phenotypes results in increased plasma sclerostin concentrations. Therefore, plasma sclerostin derived from bone limits its importance as a global marker of vascular calcification.

The COVID-19 pandemic has a significant impact on public health and the estimated number of excess deaths may be more than three times higher than documented in official statistics. Numerous studies have shown an increased risk of severe COVID-19 and death in patients with cancer. In addition, the role of SARS-CoV-2 as a potential risk factor for the development of cancer has been considered. Therefore, in this review, we summarise the available data on the potential effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection on oncogenesis, including but not limited to effects on host signal transduction pathways, immune surveillance, chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, cell cycle dysregulation, potential viral genome integration, epigenetic alterations and genetic mutations, oncolytic effects and reactivation of dormant cancer cells. We also investigated the potential long-term effects and impact of the antiviral therapy used in COVID-19 on cancer development and its progression.

Vitamin D deficiency in children is a common nutritional issue in many populations worldwide, associated not only with skeletal malformations but, as recent studies suggest, also with the development of obesity and metabolic syndrome. The aim of this observational study was to assess the nutritional status of vitamin D in a group of Polish children with obesity and different grades of metabolic syndrome, with a consequent analysis of the correlation between vitamin D levels and the components of metabolic syndrome. For that purpose, the group of 78 participants (mean age: 14.18 ± 2.67 years) was recruited and further grouped in relation to vitamin D status into two groups of children with and without vitamin D deficiency. The biochemical parameters associated with obesity as well as anthropometric measures were assessed and analysed in search of significant differences between the groups. In the current group of children with obesity and vitamin D deficiency, HDL (45.00 ± 9.29) and adiponectin (7.21 ± 1.64) were found to be significantly lower than in their peers without vitamin D deficiency, whereas W/HtR (0.60 ± 0.04) and TG (171.31 ± 80.75) levels proved to be significantly higher. Body composition analysis using bioelectrical impedance returned no significant findings. The above findings suggest that vitamin D deficiency may influence lipid and glucose metabolism in children, leading to the development of abnormalities characteristic of the metabolic syndrome. A W/HtR parameter was shown to be a sensitive marker of abdominal obesity, which might provide an important means of assessing the correlation between vitamin D and this type of obesity. Independently, vitamin D deficiency may also influence the endocrinological function of adipose tissue, leading to lower concentrations of adiponectin. These in turn presented a linear correlation with the high results of the OGTT in the second hour of the test, hinting at its potential role in the pathophysiology of insulin resistance.

Introduction: Changes in the proportion of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory adipokines may reflect the accumulation of lipids in the liver and the development of insulin resistance. Both liver steatosis and insulin resistance result in decreased sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) synthesis. This study aimed to analyze associations between circulating SHBG and adipokines levels in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Material and methods: A cross-sectional cohort study involved 87 women with phenotype A of PCOS (39 normal weight and 48 obese). Body mass, height, and waist circumference were measured, and BMI was calculated. In addition, body composition was assessed using the bioimpedance method. Serum SHBG levels and plasma apelin-36 and apelin-12, adiponectin, leptin, omentin-1, and RBP-4 were determined by using the ELISA method. The participants were divided into subgroups with SHBG concentrations above and below this lower limit [N = 35 (40.2%) and N = 52 (59.8%), respectively]. Results: The median adiponectin, apelin-12, and apelin-36 levels were significantly lower, and leptin levels were significantly higher in the subgroup with low SHBG levels than that in the subgroup above the lower limit of the reference range, while there were no differences in median omentin-1 and RBP-4 between the study subgroups. There were positive correlations between SHBG and omentin-1, adiponectin, apelin-36, and apelin-12 levels, as well as negative correlation with leptin levels. However, after adjustment by BMI, waist circumference, and body fat percentage, only the association between SHBG and omentin-1 remained significant. Conclusion: Our results show associations between circulating SHBG and adipokine levels in women with PCOS and support the role of hormonal dysfunction of the adipose tissue in the pathogenesis of PCOS.

Introduction: Regular physical activity (PA) is a recognized factor stimulating bone formation. In recent years, osteocytes have been shown to be involved in the metabolism of bone tissue in addition to osteoblasts and osteoclasts. The aim of the study was to analyze the effects of regular fitness training, sex hormones, and selected bone turnover markers on sclerostin levels in young women. Material and methods: The cross-sectional study involved 78 women including 39 who regularly engaged in fitness training (for 1 h three times a week for 3 months) and 39 leading a sedentary lifestyle. Anthropometric measurements and glucose, lipids, insulin, estradiol, testosterone, free testosterone, androstenedione, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), vitamin D, osteocalcin, ß isomer of C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (ß-CTx) and sclerostin levels were measured. Results: Activity of women (study group) who were on a high level of PA ranged between 2262 and 6606 MET/min/week (mean, 3843.16; SD = 1230). All of the control group were on low level of PA (198-1617 MET/min/week; mean, 841.06; SD = 302.01). Significantly higher levels of iPTH and ß-CTx were observed in the study than in the control group (p < 0.01). We did not observe differences in vitamin D (p > 0.12), osteocalcin (p > 0.23), or sclerostin levels (p > 0.37) between groups. There were significant negative correlations between log10 sclerostin and log10 DHEA levels (r = -0.24; p < 0.05). A multivariate stepwise backward linear regression model for sclerostin as an independent variable, with the explanatory variables physical activity, estradiol, testosterone, and DHEA levels, did not reveal any effect on changes of sclerostin levels. The model with the explanatory variables vitamin D, iPTH, ß-CTx, and osteocalcin also did not show effects on changes of sclerostin levels. Conclusions: Our results show that regular fitness training, sex hormones, vitamin D, iPTH, ß-CTx, and osteocalcin did not influence circulating sclerostin levels in young women.

Obesity in adults and its complications are among the most important problems of public health. The search was conducted by using PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Science Direct, MEDLINE, and EBSCO databases from January 2010 to December 2022 for English language meta-analyses, systematic reviews, randomized clinical trials, and observational studies from all over the world. Six main topics were defined in the joint consensus statement of the Polish Association for the Study on Obesity, the Polish Association of Endocrinology, the Polish Association of Cardio-diabetology, the Polish Psychiatric Association, the Section of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery of the Society of Polish Surgeons, and the College of Family Physicians in Poland: (1) the definition, causes and diagnosis of obesity; (2) treatment of obesity; (3) treatment of main complications of obesity; (4) bariatric surgery and its limitations; (5) the role of primary care in diagnostics and treatment of obesity and barriers; and (6) recommendations for general practitioners, regional authorities and the Ministry of Health. This statement outlines the role of an individual and the adequate approach to the treatment of obesity: overcoming obstacles in the treatment of obesity by primary health care. The approach to the treatment of obesity in patients with its most common complications is also discussed. Attention was drawn to the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation and considering the needs of patients in increasing the long-term effectiveness of obesity management.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is one of the most common chronic autoimmune diseases, characterized by absolute insulin deficiency caused via inflammatory destruction of the pancreatic ß-cell. Genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors play a role in the development of diseases. Almost ⅕ of cases involve people under the age of 20. In recent years, the incidence of both T1D and obesity has been increasing, especially among children, adolescents, and young people. In addition, according to the latest study, the prevalence of overweight or obesity in people with T1D has increased significantly. The risk factors of weight gain included using exogenous insulin, intensifying insulin therapy, fear of hypoglycemia and related decrease in physical activity, and psychological factors, such as emotional eating and binge eating. It has also been suggested that T1D may be a complication of obesity. The relationship between body size in childhood, increase in body mass index values in late adolescence and the development of T1D in young adulthood is considered. Moreover, the coexistence of T1D and T2D is increasingly observed, this situation is called double or hybrid diabetes. This is associated with an increased risk of the earlier development of dyslipidemia, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and consequently a shortening of life. Thus, the purpose of this review was to summarize the relationships between overweight or obesity and T1D.

Introduction: The study aimed to estimate the cut-off value for homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) discriminating the insulin resistance based on the sex hormones binding globulin (SHBG) level in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Materials and methods: Data from medical records of 854 Caucasian women diagnosed with PCOS were analyzed. Anthropometric data, fasting plasma glucose, insulin and SHBG levels were measured. HOMA-IR was calculated with a standard formula. The cut-off value was calculated using receiver-operating characteristics. Results: Circulating SHBG levels below the normal range (26.1 nmol/L) were found in 25.4% of study participants. This subgroup had a significantly higher BMI, fasting glucose and insulin concentrations and HOMA-IR values. Empirical optimal cut-off values for HOMA-IR corresponding to low SHBG levels was ≥2.1 [area under the curve (AUC) 0.73, accuracy 0.65, sensitivity 72.3%, specificity 63.1%, positive predictive value (PPV) 40.0%, negative predictive value (NPV) 87.0%]. Conclusions: Our study suggests that the cut-off point for HOMA-IR discriminating the insulin resistance based on the SHBG level, in young Caucasian women with polycystic ovary syndrome is 2.1, and is consistent with the cut-off value adopted by the European Group for the Study of Insulin Resistance (above 2.0).

Obesity is an established risk factor for the development of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), especially phenotype A. PCOS is an important cause of fertility disorders in a large group of women of reproductive age. For many years, effective methods of treating hormonal disorders associated with PCOS have been sought in order to restore ovulation with regular menstrual cycles. Numerous studies support obesity treatment as an effective therapeutic method for many women. A seemingly simple method of treatment may prove to be particularly difficult in this group of women. The reason for this may be the lack of recognition the primary cause of obesity development or the occurrence of a vicious circle of disease. Primary causes of developing obesity may be emotional eating (EE) and eating disorders (EDs), such as binge eating disorder (BED) and its extreme form, addictive eating, as well as night eating syndrome (NES). All of these are caused by impaired function of the reward system. Consequently, these disorders can develop or be exacerbated in women with obesity and PCOS as a result of depression and anxiety related to hirsutism and fertility disturbances. Therefore, for the effective treatment of obesity, it is very important to recognize and treat EE, BED, and NES, including the appropriate selection of pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy. Therefore, the aim of our manuscript is to analyze the available data on the relationships between EE, BED, NES, obesity, and PCOS and their impact on the treatment of obesity in women with PCOS.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of a fix-dose salmeterol/fluticasone combination therapy in asthma was previously shown for the original product. The study aim was to evaluate the clinical effectiveness and safety of a second entry DPI - dry powder inhaler (Salflumix Easyhaler) in patients with asthma in everyday clinical practice. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This multicenter Investigator-Initiated Study that enrolled 2,037 adult outpatients with asthma treated with Salflumix Easyhaler, was conducted by 220 pulmonologists across Poland. Asthma control was assessed during 3 visits with 6 ± 2 weeks intervals based on the Asthma Control Test (ACT). In addition, patient Satisfaction with Asthma Treatment Questionnaire (SATQ) and adherence and adverse events (AEs) were monitored. RESULTS: During the observation (86 ± 30 days) the percentage of patients with controlled asthma (ACT 20-25 pts) increased from 35.5% at the first visit to 86.5% at the third visit (p < 0.001). In the subgroup analysis, there were more patients not obtaining asthma control among patients that switched from the treatment with other devices than in naive ones. Global SATQ scores increased from 5.8 ± 0.7 to 6.2 ± 0.6 during the observation. Patients' satisfaction with the use of the Salflumix Easyhaler was high. Adherence exceeded 95%. Eight AEs were reported. CONCLUSIONS: Salflumix Easyhaler is highly effective and well-tolerated by naïve patients with asthma and those switching from another device. In general, patients show good compliance with medical product and are satisfied with the use of this new device, and not reporting difficulties and errors related to its' use. Their physicians' overall perception of Salflumix Easyhaler use is very positive.

Introduction: Budesonide is one of inhaled corticosteroids with an established position in the therapy of croup, bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Aim: To assess factors affecting the choice of budesonide in the therapy of croup, asthma and COPD by specialists and general practitioners in daily clinical practice. Material and methods: This multicentre, open-label, post-marketing survey was performed nation-wide with the participation of 1113 doctors and 100,980 patients treated with budesonide. The study questionnaire included questions about factors affecting the choice of budesonide and assessing the prescription pattern of the drug. Results: The doctors frequently declared use of budesonide in monotherapy in patients with croup, and in polytherapy in asthma and COPD (with salmeterol or formoterol and with formoterol, respectively). The most important factors affecting the choice of budesonide, as declared by doctors, were safety, efficacy, good personal experience with the use of this medication and recommendations of scientific associations. Budesonide in monotherapy was prescribed in 63.7%, 49.7%, and only 13.5% of patients with croup, asthma and COPD, respectively. The most important factors which determined the choice of this drug were safety (from 78.7% to 91.0%), efficacy (from 78.9% to 90.5%) and good personal experience of doctors (from 65.6% to 84.5%). Conclusions: Budesonide is still frequently chosen in the treatment of croup, asthma and COPD by Polish specialists and general practitioners because of its efficacy, safety and considerable experience in the application. Acquired clinical experience of physicians prevails over the issued recommendations of scientific societies regarding the use of budesonide in daily clinical practice.

The external health locus of control (HLC) is based on an assumption that obtained health results depend on the influences of external factors. As for the internal HLC-that is the effect of our own actions and capabilities. Little is known regarding how the HLC can influence body weight or the occurrence of visceral obesity. The study aimed to assess the relationship between the health locus of control and nutritional status in adults. The study included 744 adults (452 women, 292 men; 2.8% underweight, 43.8% normal weight, 29.7% overweight, and 23.7% obese). In addition to anthropometric measurement and socio-demographic data, the health locus of control, using the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale (MHLC) by Wallston K, Wallston B, and DeVellis R, was assessed. The percentage of subjects with an internal HLC did not differ significantly between obese, overweight, and normal-weight groups. However, the percentage of subjects with an external HLC-dependent on the impact of others-was significantly higher in both men and women with obesity than in corresponding overweight and normal-weight groups (p < 0.01). Yet, the percentage of subjects with an external HLC subject to the impact of chance was significantly higher among overweight and obese women than in those of normal weight (p < 0.05) only. Women with overweight or obesity, with external health locus of control, experienced both the impact of others and of chance more often than women with normal weight. However, men with overweight and with obesity more often had external health locus of control influenced only by others.

Little is known about the occurrence of antibodies in older subjects. We analyzed the prevalence of anticitrullinated protein antibodies (anti-CCP) in a representative cohort of Polish older adults, participants of PolSenior substudy. Randomly selected 1537 serum samples of community-dwelling participants aged 65 and over. Questionnaires were completed by qualified interviewers and laboratory assessments served as a database for this analysis. The frequency of anti-CCP seropositivity (N = 50) was estimated at 3.25% (95% CI: 2.45-4.30%), being higher among women-4.05% (2.83-5.73%) than men-2.41% (1.48-3.86%). The frequency of anti-CCP seropositivity was decreasing with age from 4.29% in aged 65-74 years and 4.07% in 70-84 years to 1.50% in aged 85 years or above (p < 0.05). Hypoalbuminemia, inflammatory status (C-reactive protein >10 mg/dL or interleukin-6 ≥10 pg/mL), and female gender were associated with increased, while age ≥85 years with decreased risk of seropositivity. Multivariable logistic regression revealed that hypoalbuminemia, inflammatory status, and age ≥85 years were independently associated factors of anti-CCP seropositivity. The decreased frequency of anti-CCP seropositivity in the oldest old suggests shorter survival of the seropositive individuals who developed rheumatoid arthritis. It seems that low symptomatic RA remains frequently undiagnosed in older subjects.

Obesity is one of the most dangerous epidemics of the 21st century. In 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic began and caused many deaths among patients with obesity with and without complications. Simultaneously, the lockdown related to the COVID-19 pandemic caused a host of emotional problems including anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances. Many people began to cope with their emotions by increasing food (emotional eating) and alcohol consumption and in combination with decreased physical activity, promoted the development of overweight and obesity. Emotional eating, also known as stress eating, is defined as the propensity to eat in response to positive and negative emotions and not physical need. It should be noted that emotional eating may be the first step in the development of binge eating disorder and its extreme subtypes such as food addiction. Interestingly in some post-bariatric surgery patients, an increased frequency of addictive disorders has been observed, for example food addiction replaced by alcohol addiction called: "cross addiction" or "addiction transfer". This data indicates that obesity should be treated as a psychosomatic disease, in the development of which external factors causing the formation of negative emotions may play a significant role. Currently, one of these factors is the COVID-19 pandemic. This manuscript discusses the relationships between the COVID-19 pandemic and development of emotional eating as well as potential implications of the viral pandemic on the obesity pandemic, and the need to change the approach to the treatment of obesity in the future.

Background: Little is known about sex differences in the risk of type 2 diabetes (DM2) development related to body fat depot. The main aim of this study was to assess sex-specific differences in the prevalence of diabetes in the relation to body mass, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and calculated body fat percentage (BF), adjusted by physical activity, in younger and older hypertensive adults. Subjects/Methods: The survey enrolled 12,289 adult hypertensive outpatients with body weight, height, and WC reported by their physicians across Poland. Prevalence of diabetes was plotted against body mass, BMI, WC, and calculated BF and adjusted by the self-reported level of physical activity. Results: In our cohort, younger women (<60 years) with BMI < 25.0 kg/m2 had lower adjusted prevalence of diabetes than corresponding men (3.4% vs. 6.5%), while among older (≥60 years) with BMI < 25.0 kg/m2, the prevalence of diabetes was greater in women than in men (19.4% vs. 11.2%). A 25% probability of diabetes was observed for younger women with lower BMI than younger men (32.1 kg/m2 and 35.3 kg/m2, respectively) and WC (100.7 cm and 116.1 cm, respectively) but greater BF (45.5% and 38.9%, respectively). The corresponding differences in BMI and WC in older ones were much smaller (27.6 kg/m2 and 27.2 kg/m2, respectively; 83.7 cm and 85.6 cm, respectively), but not for BF (40.7% and 30.1%, respectively). A doubling of diabetes probability (from 25% to 50%), adjusted by physical activity, was attributable to the lower increase in BMI and WC and BF in women than in men (6.3 vs. 9.8 kg/m2, 25.0 vs. 36.1 cm, and 6.5 vs. 10.8%, for younger, and 8.1 vs. 11.3 kg/m2, 26.2 vs. 73.2 cm and 8.8 vs. 13.3%, for older). Conclusions: This study shows a lower probability of diabetes in younger women than younger men with normal weight BMI ranges, adjusted to physical activity. This probability is greater for hypertensive women, regardless of age, due to the increase in BMI/WC and BF values adjusted for physical activity.

BACKGROUND: In March 2020 lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic forced Polish Medical Universities to implement e-learning. The aim of the study was to evaluate the perception of e-learning by students of Medical Universities in Poland. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Survey was performed nationwide via the Internet from 30th November 2020 to 10th February 2021. Six hundred fifteen (615) medical students completed the survey. The study questionnaire included questions concerning sociodemographic data, perception of lecturers' effectiveness, assessment of stationary and online classes, changes in learning habits and restrictions on education, and advantages and disadvantages of e-learning. RESULTS: The respondents reported that 96.1% of lectures, 85.5% of seminars, and 40.0% of clinical classes were implemented by e-learning. The lectures conducted by e-learning were assessed as good and very good by 78.4% and seminars by 51.2% of respondents. While the clinical classes conducted by e-learning were assessed as bad and very bad by 62.9% of respondents. The most frequently indicated limitations of e-learning were the quality of the content and available materials (26.9%), restrictions in direct contact with the lecturer (19.6%), Internet connection (16.8%), and home conditions (13.8%). Only 4% of the students had to buy or retrofit computer equipment. Any other limitations were indicated by 9.7% of the respondents. CONCLUSIONS: Students were highly accepting of lectures and seminars conducted in the form of e-learning, but not laboratory and clinical classes. The main problems in e-learning are the quality of the classes conducted and the Internet connection. The students expect e-learning classes to be conducted in real-time, with direct, face-to-face contact with the lecturer.
